Accutane Reviews

Accutane (otherwise known as Isotretinoin) or Roaccutane, as its brand name is known as in some countries, is a derivative of Vitamin A (13-cis-retinoic acid) in the form of an oral pill that is usually prescribed for 15-20 weeks. It was first produced in 1979, by drug giant Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., to treat patients with acne that had otherwise not responded to any other treatment. It was and is considered a very last resort due to its horrific and damaging side effects. People tried hard to ban the drug but over the past 25 years it has gained popularity and is sometimes even prescribed to treat milder acne, which is considered highly irresponsible although users suffering from varying degrees of acne do experience life changing improvements to their skin.

How Does Accutane Work?

Accutane affects the ways that acne develops but no one is entirely certain of the exact way that Accutane works. But it works in 4 stages:

1) It reduces the size of the skins oil glands between 35-58% and reduces the amount of oil that the skin produces by around 80%.

2) Acne bacteria are drastically reduced.

3) It has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

4) It helps to slow the production of skin cells inside the pore which stops the pores from becoming blocked in the first place.

The results of Accutane tend to be very dramatic and quick, although a small majority of people’s acne actually worsens during the first month of taking Accutane. It generally either completely or partially clears acne in about 95% of people who complete a cycle. Patients on a dose of 100-120mg/kg attain the best, long-term results and are least likely to have a relapse of their symptoms. Patients on a lower dose are more likely to have their symptoms reappear after stopping treatment; the dose is adjusted depending on the patient’s body weight. Patients commonly have blood tests to ensure that the blood-fat levels aren’t being affected by the Accutane.

Accutane Side Effects

What makes Accutane so controversial are the side effects. Many (but not all) users will experience some degree of side effects and they range from: extremely dry skin, lips, eyes and anus, thinning hair and serious foetal damage and birth defects, personality changes, permanent irreversible liver damage, permanent disfigurement of the face to even suicide, a number of patients have committed suicide after suffering from severe depression. Some users have claimed that Accutane has destroyed their lives while some hail Accutane as a miracle.

In Conclusion

There is no denying that Accutane does cure acne but for some, the price of losing acne is a too higher price to pay. It is not a treatment to go into lightly and really should only be considered under the most severe circumstances where absolutely no other course of action has worked and your acne is essentially destroying your life and even then it should be taken under very strict medical supervision. You cannot purchase Accutane other than through a prescription by a doctor, to do so would be not only illegal but hazardous and in some cases, fatal.

On July 8, 2009, Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. has announced that Accutane wouldn’t be sold anymore. One of the big reasons is: Personal injury lawsuits, which Roche is aggressively defending.
