Differin Reviews

Differin Acne Treatment is made by Galderma Laboratories. It is available in either a cream or a gel that contain Adapalene which is its active ingredient. It is available on prescription only either prescribed by a doctor or a dermatologist.

What is Differin?

Differin is a topical retinoid. Retinoids attack the bacteria that can lead to acne, getting under the surface of the skin to treat the cause. Retinoids are clinically proven to destroy current spots and prevent new breakouts from forming. Differin can be prescribed in different strengths, 0.1% is the strength usually prescribed though for very severe acne a concentration of 0.3% may be prescribed. For skin mildly affected by acne or for very sensitive skin, a 0.1% concentration can be used.

Differin is applied over the entire face, concentrating on the problem areas avoiding the eye and mouth area on freshly cleansed skin, usually only once a day and preferably before bedtime. Some people may use Differin every other day if their skin is particularly sensitive. Differin tends to work best on non-inflammatory acne and a very sparing amount of the product is needed – a little goes a long way. It works by promoting new cell tissue growth and stopping overactive oil production to a halt.

Does Differin Really Work?

You will see results from regular use of Differin after 2-3 months although everyone is different so it may take less time for some people and more time for others to see visible differences. The disadvantages are that there are rather a lot of things to be aware of before you start to use Differin and quite a few side effects. It can cause itching, burning, redness, dryness, stinging and peeling of the skin. People with other skin complaints such as eczema should not use Differin. Pregnant women are advised not to take Differin and if you are on any medical or dietary supplements you need to consult a doctor beforehand to check that Differin does not interact with any medication. Differin can make you more susceptible to burning in the sun so you should avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

There is no doubt that Differin is a powerful acne treatment and does work although it does take a long time compared with some more natural products on the market and the amount of possible side effects could deter people from using it. The fact it is not easily accessible and that it needs to be prescribed and only if your doctor thinks it warrants it could be off putting. We think Differin is best reserved for a last resort not as a first port of call.
